Serving Others

Serving Others

Twelve years ago I was very much wanting to get involved with a philanthropic cause. My life was blessed, and I was feeling the need and urge to give back. I have always felt balanced internally when I am able to help someone or just be of service to others in any capacity. Growing up in a devout Mormon household, it was common practice to see my mother bring meals to families in need or lend a helping hand to others that had less than my modest family did. I have seen the joy it brings people, most of all the givers, and maybe that’s what has been the driving force for me. It makes me feel so good to help others. There is true peace in service and deep meaning in life when one is committed to this path.

Twelve years ago I was getting my hair done and I was telling my stylist that I really wanted to get involved with some charities. Being a mom I mentioned that I would preferably like to do something that had to do with helping children. I feel a deep connection and soft spot for children in need. She told me about an organization called Casa Pacifica, a home for abused and neglected kids. I was immediately put in contact with Vicki Murphy, who is the director of development and operations at Casa. Essentially she is the heart and soul of this place. The kids love her and she makes them feel safe and reminds them of their worth and value in the world.

We live in a country where sadly, our foster care system is failing on so many levels and a lot of kids are falling between the cracks, and in many cases dying. It kills me to think a child or even a teen dies because they are forgotten about, or cast aside. It is not their fault that they were born into circumtances out of their control, and I believe it is our responsibility to help when possible

Getting involved with this remarkable organization has shifted my life in ways that are immeasurable. I have seen what hands on connection creates and how that connection and care not only helps heal the child, but it unifies all of us. After all we are all in this together, and I do believe it is every persons responsibility to give back. My children have been moved in the deepest of ways by the experience of service. Charity luncheons and events are great fun and provide a win win for the attendees and the causes that they support. I personally attend when I can, however truly getting involved is something quite different. Actually seeing and putting your hands on someone that is in need of love and support is what shifts us. These experiences remind us that our petty grievances are truly petty and that the blessings bestowed upon us are miraculous and not to be taken lightly. It doesn’t take a lot of time either to serve others. I urge everyone to try it, get involved and watch what happens. I’ll even go with you!
